Franklin's first snap in Blacksburg comes against a program going in the opposite direction. VMI and Virginia Tech haven't met since 1984, and this version of the Keydets is walking into Lane Stadium far more overmatched than history alone suggests. Ethan Grunkemeyer, who followed Franklin from Penn State, gets his first start as the unquestioned starter in a brand new offense, and Franklin has already made clear there's no quarterback competition heading into it — Grunkemeyer's the guy.
VMI's problems run deeper than the scoreboard. The Keydets are 1-11 in back-to-back seasons, lost their starting quarterback to the transfer portal, and watched head coach Danny Rocco leave for Blacksburg to join Virginia Tech's own staff as a senior analyst. Without a graduate program at the school, VMI can't patch roster holes with grad transfers the way most FCS programs do. Receiver Noah Grevious, who put up 731 yards and 3 touchdowns last year, is about the only name a scouting report needs to flag.

None of that guarantees a clean night for the home team. This is Franklin's first game running this program, and first games under a new staff carry some natural uncertainty even against a clearly lesser opponent. Virginia Tech is breaking in a transfer quarterback, a transfer receiver in Que'Sean Brown, and a new offensive staff all at once — cohesion doesn't always show up cleanly in Week 1, no matter who's on the other sideline.

The pieces around Grunkemeyer suggest Virginia Tech shouldn't need much time to figure things out. Brown caught 846 yards worth of passes at Duke last season and slots in next to returning top wideout Ayden Greene, while running back Marcellous Hawkins quietly ranked 5th in the ACC at 6.35 yards per carry a year ago. Add in Penn State tight end transfer Luke Reynolds, and Franklin has more skill talent to work with in Week 1 than most first-year coaches get.

For Virginia Tech, this opener is less about the final score and more about first impressions — how the new staff handles a game it's supposed to win comfortably, how quickly Grunkemeyer and his new receivers find a rhythm, and whether the roster Franklin built through the portal in six months looks the part before ACC play gets serious. For VMI, it's just about survival and building something to point to before conference play with Samford starts a few weeks later.
