Demond Williams Jr. heads into Friday, October 16 as one of the more talked-about quarterbacks in the Big Ten after 15 career starts, and after an offseason that briefly threatened to blow up before he recommitted to Washington. Purdue counters with Ryan Browne, the sophomore Odom has publicly gone to the mat for, comparing his arm talent to a former Drew Lock. Two very different quarterback stories collide here — one settled after drama, one still being written.

Washington's roster looks different than the one that closed out 2025. Leading rusher Jonah Coleman and leading receiver Denzel Boston are both gone to the NFL Draft, which puts real weight on Williams and a defense that returns one of the country's better linebacker groups under coordinator Ryan Walters. Purdue spent its offseason doing what Odom has done since he arrived — hauling in bodies through the portal (82 additions between high school and transfer recruiting) while installing new defensive coordinator Kevin Kane to try to fix a unit that got run through in 2025.

That said, Odom's first year wasn't nothing. Purdue started 2-0 for the first time since 1916 and had competitive stretches against USC, Minnesota, Rutgers and Michigan before the record caught up to them. Seven Boilermakers earned all-conference recognition despite the ugly final tally, which suggests there's more talent in West Lafayette than the win column shows — just not enough to make this an obvious trap game for a Washington team that still has real questions about a defensive line that's been almost completely overhauled.
