Kennesaw State kicks off its Conference USA title defense at home Thursday night against a West Georgia team that's climbing the FCS ranks fast — just not with the coach who got them there.

Kennesaw State enters as the reigning CUSA champ hosting a program that's still building toward full FBS status, and that gap in level should show up in the win column even with lineup questions on both sides. West Georgia's got real juice after its breakout 2025, but a true road opener under a first-year head coach is a tough spot to steal one. Back the Owls to win outright.

West Georgia
  • Started 2025 5-0, program's best start since 2018
  • First-ever FCS top-25 ranking, finished with 8 wins
  • Up-tempo offensive identity carries into 2026
  • Lost head coach Joel Taylor to Mercer this offseason
  • New HC Steve Englehart's FBS road debut immediately
  • Still a transitional D-I program facing a conference champ
Kennesaw State
  • Reigning CUSA champions, went 10-4 in 2025
  • Jerry Mack named CUSA Coach of the Year
  • LB Baron Hopson returns after 138-tackle season
  • Blown out 6-41 by Western Michigan in bowl game
  • 28 transfer portal additions still need to gel
  • QB competition unsettled after Odom/Syracuse swap

This is about as lopsided a season opener as you'll find on paper. Kennesaw State enters as the reigning CUSA champion off a 10-4 season, while West Georgia is still building toward full FBS membership as a transitional UAC program. But records from a year ago only tell you so much about who shows up in Week 1.

The Owls have their own turnover to sort through. Jerry Mack, fresh off being named CUSA Coach of the Year, has to replace pieces from a team that went from 2-10 to a conference title in one year, and the quarterback room has been anything but quiet — Rickie Collins is the returning name to watch after Kennesaw State and Syracuse swapped signal-callers this offseason. Getting continuity there in Game 1 matters.

West Georgia isn't just a cupcake, either. The Wolves opened 2025 by ripping off a 5-0 start — the program's best since 2018 — and closed the year with 8 wins and their first-ever FCS top-25 ranking. The catch: the coach who built that, Joel Taylor, is gone to Mercer, and Steve Englehart is stepping in from Presbyterian to try to keep the momentum alive on the road against a program a level up.

Kennesaw State's defense gives them a stabilizing force no matter who's throwing the ball. Linebacker Baron Hopson is back after a monster 2025 — 138 tackles, 9 tackles for loss, 5 pass breakups — and that kind of returning production is exactly what a team hunting a repeat needs while the offense finds its footing. The Owls also brought in 28 transfer portal additions this offseason, so there's real newness to shake out even with the pedigree.

For West Georgia, the opener is as much about establishing a new identity as it is about the scoreboard. A new head coach, a retooled offensive room, and a true road test against an FBS conference champion is a lot to ask in Week 1 — but this is a program that's shown it doesn't scare easily, and a competitive showing here would be a real early marker for where the Wolves are headed.
