This is the kind of game Luke Fickell needed on the calendar. Wisconsin's offense was bottom-five nationally in both scoring and yards a year ago, and the fix hinges on Colton Joseph, the Old Dominion transfer who threw for 2,624 yards and ran for 1,007 more as the Sun Belt's Offensive Player of the Year. New coordinator Jeff Grimes gets to install his scheme against an FCS defense before conference play gets real, and that matters more than the final score.
Western Illinois isn't walking into Camp Randall with much momentum. The Leathernecks finished 4-8 last fall, 3-5 in what's now OVC-Big South play, and this trip to Madison comes sandwiched between home dates with Northwestern College and 2025 FCS runner-up Illinois State. It's a get-paid road trip more than a program-building one, and Wisconsin's talent gap at every position group is the story regardless of who's under center for either side.

The bigger intrigue for Badgers fans is whether Joseph looks like the dual-threat weapon Wisconsin has lacked, or whether the accuracy and pocket-timing questions that follow him from the Sun Belt show up immediately. A huge recruiting class and additions like running back Abu Sama III and receiver Malachi Coleman give this offense more juice than last year's group, and a game like this is exactly where that talent should show up early and often.
