Indiana enters the season as the defending national champion and preseason No. 1. Western Kentucky is just trying to survive the trip to Bloomington.

This is about as lopsided as a moneyline gets on paper — a defending national champion hosting a Conference USA team breaking in a new starting quarterback. Indiana's roster continuity on the offensive line and defensive front should be enough to win comfortably even with Hoover making his first start in Bloomington colors. There's no value angle here worth chasing against the Hoosiers.

Western Kentucky
  • 9-4 in 2025, won the New Orleans Bowl
  • Seventh straight bowl trip under Tyson Helton
  • Program has stability and a winning culture
  • Starting QB job still unsettled entering season
  • Lost significant offensive production from 2025
  • Massive roster-talent gap against a title team
Indiana
  • Defending national champion, preseason No. 1
  • Elite returning OL, led FBS in tackles for loss
  • Added proven transfer QB and skill talent
  • Replacing a Heisman winner at quarterback
  • No more surprise factor against Big Ten foes
  • New starter needs live reps to settle in

The Hoosiers went 16-0 last year and won it all, and now they're breaking in a new quarterback to try to do it again. Josh Hoover, the TCU transfer who put up 9,629 career passing yards and 71 touchdowns in Fort Worth, steps in for Heisman winner Fernando Mendoza. He's the most productive returning passer in the FBS on paper, but replacing a Heisman winner still means answering questions in real games, not spring ball.

Western Kentucky, meanwhile, is still figuring out who's actually taking snaps. Rodney Tisdale Jr., who threw for 1,432 yards and 9 touchdowns last season, is in a battle with Florida State transfer Brock Glenn for the job. The Hilltoppers went 9-4 in 2025 and beat Southern Miss in the New Orleans Bowl, their fifth bowl win in seven years under Tyson Helton — a program that knows how to win at its level, but this isn't its level.

Indiana's roster returns three offensive line starters, including reigning Big Ten Offensive Lineman of the Year Carter Smith, behind a defense that led the country in tackles for loss last year. Add in transfer additions Turbo Richard at running back and Nick Marsh at receiver, and Cignetti's staff has stacked more talent onto a team that already won a title. Western Kentucky's front seven has to find a way to slow that down without much size advantage anywhere on the field.

The bigger story for Indiana this year isn't Western Kentucky — it's whether the Hoosiers can handle being the hunted instead of the hunter. Every Big Ten opponent had a full offseason to pick apart Cignetti's scheme, and the days of sneaking up on anybody are over. None of that applies against a Conference USA team, though. This is a measuring-stick opener in the sense that Indiana should crush it, and how comfortably they do it will say more about the new-look offense than the scoreboard margin will.

For Western Kentucky, Saturday, September 19 is about building an identity before conference play matters more. Whoever wins the Tisdale-Glenn battle needs reps against a defense this talented to find out what he actually has. There's no shame in a loss here — the Hilltoppers have made a bowl seven straight years doing exactly this kind of schedule management, taking their lumps early and rounding into form by November.
