Both programs enter 2026 with new faces at quarterback, which makes this one less about history and more about who's figured out their new pieces by the time November rolls around. Western Kentucky is breaking in Maverick McIvor, the Abilene Christian transfer who put up big numbers at the FCS level, after Caden Veltkamp left for the portal. Liberty countered by landing Deshawn Purdie, rated as the second-best incoming transfer in the new-look CUSA behind only FIU's JJ Kohl. Neither guy will still be a mystery by late November, but how each has grown into the job says a lot about who wins this one.
The bigger swing factor might be depth. WKU is replacing most of its offensive line with transfers and leaning on backups defensively, which is the kind of thing that can look shaky in September and settle in by the stretch run. Liberty's overhaul goes further — Purdie, receiver Makai Jackson and running back Kam Davis were all brought in to fix an offense that stalled out during a four-game losing skid to end 2025, all three defeats decided by one possession. Head coach Jamey Chadwell is also back at full strength after offseason surgery for a health issue he managed through last season, which matters for a program trying to reset its culture.

Liberty's four straight one-score losses to end 2025 are the real story here — that's not a team that got blown out of games, it's one that couldn't finish them. If Purdie and the new skill talent close that gap even a little, a home game against WKU in late November is exactly the kind of statement win the program needs to reestablish itself in a conference it was supposed to be pushing to win. Western Kentucky, meanwhile, has to prove last year's title-contending form travels with a retooled roster instead of leaning on whoever was already there.
