Thursday, October 1 doubles as the Conference USA opener for both programs, and it's a matchup of two teams that spent the offseason gutting their rosters through the portal. WKU is coming off a 9-4 season and a 27-16 New Orleans Bowl win over Southern Miss, with Tyson Helton now in his 8th year and a career record of 57-36. New Mexico State enters year 3 under Tony Sanchez, who's gone a combined 7-17 and is still chasing his first winning season in Las Cruces.

The quarterback situations on both sides are the real story here. WKU brought in Florida State transfer Brock Glenn to push for the job, but he wasn't even suited up for the spring game and isn't competing for the starting role the way the program hoped. That leaves Rodney Tisdale Jr., last year's CUSA Freshman of the Year who started 8 games as a true freshman, as the presumptive guy under center. New Mexico State has an actual 3-man competition going between transfers Trey Hedden and Kalani McLeod and returner Adam Damante, who threw 5 touchdowns over his final two starts last season and reportedly knows the offense best -- though Sanchez has said there's no rush to name a starter.

WKU has the pedigree and the continuity edge walking into this one -- a bowl-winning staff, a returning starting quarterback with real starts on his resume, and a program that's been building rather than scrambling. New Mexico State is the wild card: talented pieces on paper, but an unsettled QB room and a roster that hasn't proven it can finish games. This is exactly the kind of early-season conference opener where the team with fewer question marks usually wins out.
