TLDR: Western Michigan heads up U.S. 131 at 2-0 in the MAC. Central Michigan is 1-1 and coming off a 17-point loss at Ohio. On Saturday, October 17, the in-state rivalry decides which of them is still a real MAC contender and which is chasing.

Western Michigan (4-2, 2-0 MAC) visits Central Michigan (3-3, 1-1 MAC) in an in-state rivalry game with real MAC stakes. The Broncos have won 2 straight, most recently 38-7 over Kent State. The Chippewas are 3-0 at home and 0-3 on the road. A cold, windy early forecast and kicker and tight end injuries on both sides could keep this lower-scoring and closer than Western's recent form suggests.

Western Michigan Broncos
  • Unbeaten in MAC play, 2-0
  • Lowry-to-Parks connection produced 2 TDs vs Kent State
  • Offense scored on a 4-play opening drive last time out
  • Starting kicker Domschke out, no timetable
  • Boise State beat them 32-7 at home
Central Michigan Chippewas
  • 3-0 at home this season
  • Scored 41 on Akron in last home game
  • Lost 31-14 at Ohio as of last Saturday
  • TE Allen out, FB VanWetzinga questionable (knee)
  • Offense managed 13 and 3 in two of its games

Start with what Western Michigan just did. The Broncos beat Kent State 38-7 at homecoming. They needed 4 plays to go 75 yards on the opening drive, and Lowry hit Adam Parks for a 42-yard touchdown. Parks caught a second score in the 4th quarter, and Trey Petty finished it on a 4-yard run. The win moved Western to 4-2 and 2-0 in the MAC. That's the offense Central Michigan's defense has to solve at Kelly/Shorts Stadium.

Central Michigan's season doesn't move in a straight line. It beat Colgate by 3, beat Wyoming by 14, got run over 52-3 at Miami, then dropped 41 on Akron. The 31-14 loss at Ohio knocked the Chippewas to 3-3 and 1-1 in league play. They've only been at their best at home. All 3 wins came in Mount Pleasant and all 3 losses on the road, which is the best thing they have going into this one.

The Broncos have already taken one real punch. Boise State came to Kalamazoo and won 32-7, and that is the only loss in Western's last 5. Since then they've won close and won big. A 20-17 grind at Buffalo was followed by the Kent State blowout. Neither team is ranked, and neither needs to be for this one to matter in the MAC race.

Both teams have availability questions. Western Michigan has been without kicker P. Domschke, who is out with an undisclosed injury and has no timetable. Dieter Kelly made a 31-yarder against Kent State, so the Broncos have someone kicking. In Central's case, tight end J. Allen is out and fullback R. VanWetzinga IV is listed questionable with a knee injury. Losing both would thin out the blocking up front for a team that hasn't scored much in its losses.

Weather could matter too. The early forecast for Mount Pleasant is 42 degrees, cloudy, with wind around 16 mph. It's a week out and will change, but cold air and that kind of wind hurt the deep ball Western used to open the Kent State game, and they make every Broncos kick a bigger question. Central gets a home crowd and a team that's tough to beat in its own building. Western gets the hotter offense. It probably comes down to whether the Chippewas who scored 41 on Akron show up, or the ones who managed 14 at Ohio.
