Duke's title defense rolls on with a money game against an FCS opponent that just missed its own conference's playoff field. This one's a mismatch on paper before the ball is even snapped.

This is about as lopsided a class gap as you'll find on a Saturday slate — an ACC champion at home against an FCS program that didn't even make its own conference's playoff field. Duke's talent advantage across the roster is significant even with a new starting quarterback under center. William & Mary would need a near-perfect script and a handful of Duke mistakes to make this remotely interesting.

William & Mary
  • Went 7-5 overall, 6-2 in CAA play last year
  • Beat Maine, competitive in most CAA games
  • Fresh motivation entering new Patriot League era
  • Missed 2025 FCS playoffs after losing to rival Richmond
  • Didn't beat a single team with a winning record
  • Massive class jump against an ACC champion
Duke
  • Defending ACC champs, first outright title since 1962
  • Manny Diaz has won 9+ games each of last two years
  • Capped 2025 with a Sun Bowl win over Arizona State
  • Lost starting QB Darian Mensah and WR Cooper Barkate to the portal
  • Replacing Mensah with untested-at-this-level transfer Walker Eget
  • CBS Sports projects only a 6-6 season in 2026

Duke walks into this one as the reigning ACC champion, and that's not a small thing to say about a Blue Devils program that hadn't won an outright league title since 1962. Manny Diaz's group beat Virginia 27-20 in overtime for the crown, then closed the year by slugging past Arizona State 42-39 in the Sun Bowl. William & Mary, on the other hand, is walking into Durham as a program in transition, still adjusting to life after leaving the CAA for the Patriot League.

The bigger story in Durham is who isn't walking through the door anymore. Quarterback Darian Mensah and receiver Cooper Barkate both bolted for Miami in the offseason, leaving Diaz to plug in San Jose State transfer Walker Eget, a fifth-year senior who threw for more than 5,500 yards and 30 touchdowns over his last two seasons out west. A game against an FCS opponent is about as gentle a landing spot as a new starter could ask for.

William & Mary isn't walking in overmatched by accident, either. The Tribe finished 7-5 a year ago, tied for third in the CAA, but their season ended with a loss to rival Richmond that kept them out of the FCS playoffs entirely. Their best win came against Maine, and they didn't beat a single team with a winning record all season — a resume that doesn't inspire much confidence against a roster that just went toe-to-toe with the sport's best.

Diaz has quietly built one of the more consistent programs in the ACC, posting 9 wins in each of the last two seasons and chasing a third straight this fall. That kind of steadiness matters against a cupcake date like this one — Duke isn't the type of program that lets its foot off the gas against overmatched competition, even while it's still working in new pieces at the skill positions.

For William & Mary, this is more about survival and evaluation than an actual upset bid. Mike London's program is in the early days of its Patriot League era, and a trip to Durham against a defending conference champion is exactly the kind of measuring-stick game that tells a coaching staff what it actually has heading into a new league slate.
