Luke Fickell is entering year 4 in Madison with his job security very much a live topic after Wisconsin stumbled to a 4-8 finish in 2025, 2-7 in Big Ten play. The AD backed him publicly this offseason, and Fickell responded by calling this his deepest quarterback room yet, with Old Dominion transfer Colton Joseph, Louisville transfer Deuce Adams and true freshman Ryan Hopkins all in the mix. Whoever wins that job inherits a defense that returns just 3 starters, so there's real pressure on the offense to carry the load early.
UCLA's version of the same story started with an in-season firing. This one reads less like a marquee Big Ten showdown and more like two programs figuring out who they are on the fly. Wisconsin arrives off a bye per its own schedule release, which should help settle whichever quarterback wins the job. UCLA gets the benefit of a new voice and a home boost. Neither is a great bet to look finished by mid-October, so the matchup ultimately projects on execution and whichever staff has its rebuild further along by then.
