Kent State is trying to prove last year's turnaround wasn't a mirage, and first-time visitor Wofford is walking into Dix Stadium as the closest thing to a measuring stick this early in the season.

Kent State is the deeper roster on both lines and gets this one at home in a first-ever meeting, which is exactly the setup MAC programs schedule an FCS opponent for. Carney's group showed real fight closing 2025 at 5-7 after the 0-12 disaster, and that trajectory alone makes them the right side here. Wofford's own late-season surge is legitimate, but the level jump is the deciding factor.

Wofford
  • 13 returning starters, real 2026 continuity
  • closed 2025 winning 6 of last 7
  • opened 2025 0-5, slow to start seasons
  • clear FCS-to-FBS talent gap on the road
Kent State
  • 5-7 rebound after 0-12 nightmare season
  • comeback win over Bowling Green shows fight
  • lost 24 transfers, added just 1 notable piece
  • Carney unproven as a full-time, non-interim coach

This is a first-ever meeting between the two programs, and it's Kent State's first full season under Mark Carney, who shed the interim tag last year after replacing Kenni Burns. Wofford, a Southern Conference regular under 4th-year coach Shawn Watson, is walking into a classic buy-game spot against an FBS opponent still trying to climb out of a historically bad stretch.

Kent State's offseason was recruiting-heavy rather than portal-heavy — 19 signees in the Early Signing Period, 14 of them from Ohio — but the roster took a real hit in the transfer market, losing 24 players against just 1 notable addition in linebacker Rocco Nicholl. Wofford enters with more continuity, returning 13 starters (5 on offense, 8 on defense, 1 specialist) off a team that finished 2025 on a serious roll.

The bigger story is where each program is coming from. Kent State went 0-12 in 2024, a losing streak that stretched to 21 games and included a 71-0 loss to Tennessee and a defeat to an FCS opponent. Carney's 5-7 finish last season, capped by a comeback win over Bowling Green, was the first real sign of life in years. Wofford has its own recovery arc — an 0-5 start in 2025 before ripping off 6 wins in the final 7 games to close 6-6.

Recent form.

That late-season form is exactly why this game is interesting on paper even with the talent gap. Kent State's young receiver duo of Jared Kelley and Jay Jay Ethridge, plus a crowded running back room including transfers Jakorian Caffey and Mason King, gives Carney more pieces to work with than he had during the winless season. Wofford's continuity up front and at linebacker is why Watson's group finished with real momentum instead of limping to the finish line.

Nothing this early in the summer changes the baseline read: Kent State is the far more talented roster hosting an FCS opponent for the first time, and it should handle its business. But this program has burned a lot of goodwill with bad Septembers, and Wofford isn't walking in overwhelmed given how it played down the stretch last year. That tension is worth watching even in what's supposed to be a tune-up game.
