Wyoming heads into Saturday, October 3 with a genuinely new offense: OC Christian Taylor, fresh off time on staff with the Buffalo Bills, is running fall camp, and William & Mary transfer Tyler Hughes is the frontrunner to start after throwing for over 2,300 yards and rushing for 650 more last season, with only 3 interceptions on 308 attempts. Nothing's settled — head coach Jay Sawvel keeps calling it an open competition — but Hughes' dual-threat numbers give Laramie its best shot at a real answer at the position. Across the field, North Dakota State hands the keys to senior Nathan Hayes, who spent the last year and a half backing up Cole Payton and enters with just 63 career pass attempts to his name.
Hayes won't have the same firepower around him that NDSU had in 2025 — the Bison also have to replace leading rusher Barika Kpeenu and top receiver Bryce Lance, the kind of production loss that usually shows up early in a new starter's first season. That's the real swing factor for a program that otherwise arrives in a new league with more continuity than almost anyone else walking into it.
