Will Stein's tenure at Kentucky begins for real on Saturday, September 5, and the opponent isn't the cupcake a first-year SEC coach usually wants. Youngstown State brings back Beau Brungard, the reigning Walter Payton Award winner and a unanimous All-American who threw just 4 interceptions last season while breaking 56 tackles as a runner. It's a legitimate season-opening test dressed up as a paycheck game.
Kentucky isn't walking into this as the same team that finished 5-7 and got run out of the building 41-0 by Louisville to end Mark Stoops' run. Stein, hired off Oregon's staff, went out and rebuilt the roster with one of the best transfer classes in the country — 247Sports had it ranked No. 9 nationally, with more than 30 additions. The headliner is quarterback Kenny Minchey, a former four-star who spent 2 seasons at Notre Dame before landing in Lexington; Kentucky hasn't formally locked in a Week 1 starter, but Minchey lines up as the clear favorite to take the first snap of the Stein era.
