The Cubs are 29-23 and somehow feel worse than that. After winning 10 in a row, they have lost 5 straight, and now they get the Astros for a series finale with a chance to make it 6. Houston is 22-31 and beat up, but the Astros have actually played decent baseball lately and are not just rolling over on the road.

The pitching matchup is the kind that should favor Chicago on paper. Shota Imanaga is 4-4 with a 3.38 ERA, but his last time out was a clunker against the Brewers, where he got tagged for 8 runs on 9 hits in 4.2 innings and Craig Counsell flat-out said he did not have his command. Peter Lambert, meanwhile, has been one of the few feel-good stories in Houston after coming up from Sugar Land in April, with quality starts in back-to-back outings including 7 shutout innings against the Dodgers.
The injury list for the Astros reads like a horror novel. No Yordan Alvarez today (back), no Jose Altuve, no Carlos Correa, no Yainer Diaz, no Josh Hader, no Hunter Brown, no Lance McCullers Jr. That this team is even competitive in games right now is a minor miracle, and it makes the Cubs' inability to put them away even more frustrating for the Wrigley crowd.

The market sees this one pretty clearly. Cubs are -149 at DK and the run line sits at -1.5, with the public money landing heavier on Chicago to bounce back at home. The total is parked at 7, which feels right with both starters pitching well lately and Imanaga's blowup looking more like an outlier than a trend.
The simple read: if the Cubs can't beat a Houston team missing roughly half its lineup behind a starter who was in the minors a month ago, the panic meter at Clark and Addison goes from mild concern to legitimate alarm. First pitch is 1:20 PM local.
