Peter Lambert got the ball for Houston looking to build on a 7-5 record and a 3.14 ERA, while Kumar Rocker took the mound for Texas trying to shake off a rough stretch that had his ERA sitting at 4.40. First pitch was 6:05 PM CT, and the pitching matchup on paper favored the visitors before anyone threw a pitch.

Missed — Houston controlled this from the first inning and Rocker's early-inning issues (the bear case) sunk the home side outright.

Pregame

We backed the Rangers to win outright even with deGrom scratched, trusting the top of a lineup that had just dropped 13 runs on the Angels days earlier. Houston's Lambert gave them a real form edge on paper, but Texas at home with the better recent record still made sense as the play at the price. It didn't hold up here.

Rocker's last outing was a 4.1-inning, 3-earned-run night against Detroit, and he's been living dangerously with traffic on the bases all year. Lambert, meanwhile, was fresh off a gem against Tampa Bay: 5.2 shutout innings, 6 strikeouts, just 1 walk. The gap in recent form between the two starters ended up mattering a lot.

Texas also walked into this one missing its ace. Jacob deGrom was scratched from his scheduled start with a glute strain, and Corey Seager's still on the 10-day IL with lower-back inflammation — two enormous absences for a team trying to hold first place. That's the kind of context that shapes a line before oddsmakers even finish setting it.

Houston came in banged up too — Carlos Correa is done for the year after ankle surgery, and the rotation has been a MASH unit for weeks. But the bullpen has quietly turned into a strength, and it showed up again here. The Astros are still fighting to climb out of third in the West, and games like this are how they do it.

The final tells the story cleanly. Houston jumped out 2-0 in the first, tacked on 4 more in the third, and never let Texas get comfortable. The Rangers' only real answer was a couple of two-run rallies bookending a mostly quiet night, but by the time the ninth rolled around it was 9-3 and academic.

For a team that had won 4 of 5 and looked like it was rounding into form, Texas needed a cleaner effort from Rocker and didn't get one. Houston, on the other hand, banked a signature road win over a division leader — exactly the kind of result that keeps a comeback season alive.
