On the mound — starting pitchers.

This is the front end of a four-game set at the Big A, and on paper it's a mismatch. The A's are 24-24 and have somehow held the better half of the AL West, while the Angels are 17-32 and have lost 4 of their last 5. Anaheim has been especially soft at home, and the visitors counter with their best starter.

Aaron Civale has quietly been one of the best free-agent signings of the offseason — 5-1 with a 2.70 ERA on a one-year, $6 million deal the A's handed him in February. He's not blowing anyone away with stuff, but he's pounding the zone and getting deep into games. Jack Kochanowicz, meanwhile, is the better story than the line suggests. His 4.56 ERA is ugly, but he's already a massive upgrade over the 6.81 he posted in 2025, and his last time out he gave the Angels 5.2 innings of one-run ball against Toronto in a tough-luck loss.

The market has the A's as moderate road favorites at -116, with Pinnacle pricing the spread at A's -1 (+108). DraftKings is offering the more conventional 1.5 run line at -142 home / +118 away. Worth flagging that all four sides come back negative EV against the Pinnacle fair line — there's no obvious edge here, just a game the sharps see as a coin flip leaning slightly A's.

Recent form.

The injury report is where the Angels really lose this matchup before first pitch. Anthony Rendon is on the 60-day (again), Travis d'Arnaud has no timetable from a foot issue, and they're down both Ben Joyce and Robert Stephenson from a bullpen that can't afford to give anything back. The A's are dealing with Jacob Wilson and Max Muncy on the IL, but both are progressing, and Oakland has more functional depth around them right now.

Total sits at 9.5 on Pinnacle, 9 at DK, with the over getting 69% of the handle. That's a believable number — Kochanowicz is walking too many guys to project a clean line, and Civale isn't the kind of arm that nukes a slate. If the A's get to the Angels bullpen by the 6th, this gets ugly fast. Lean Athletics, trust the rotation gap, and don't fall in love with the price.
