Athletics at Padres on a Friday night in San Diego, and somehow the upstart A's are the team showing up with momentum. They've taken 3 in a row to climb to 26-24, while the Padres are coming off back-to-back losses to slow what had been a steady month.

Jeffrey Springs is the headline and the worry at the same time. He opened the year with a 1.46 ERA through 4 starts and looked like the A's best free-agent investment in years. Then the wheels came off — an 8.36 ERA across his last 3 outings, capped by a hip-soreness exit against the Royals that Mark Kotsay called precautionary. His season line is still a tidy 3.93, but the trend line is doing him no favors.

Walker Buehler is the other side of that coin. The Padres are still waiting for the version of him they thought they were getting, and a 5.01 ERA tells you most of what you need to know. He's mixed in a couple of clean stretches — 11 straight Cardinals retired in one start — but the back end of the San Diego rotation is shaky enough that Lucas Giolito's signing is already lurking behind him.

The Padres are short favorites, which feels right given how thin both rotations look right now. San Diego is missing Darvish, Musgrove, Pivetta, and Marquez from its starting depth, and Jackson Merrill has been in and out of the lineup. The A's, for their part, are still without Jacob Wilson and Max Muncy, and Gunnar Hoglund's season is officially done after hip surgery.

An 8 total fits the matchup if you trust Buehler to navigate a punchless A's lineup and you don't trust Springs' hip to make it through 5. Flip either of those assumptions and the over gets a lot more interesting. First pitch is 8:40 PM ET at Petco.
