J.T. Ginn (7-4, 3.10 ERA) got the ball for Oakland trying to snap a brutal stretch, while Tarik Skubal (4-4, 3.06 ERA) took the mound for Detroit still working his way back from elbow surgery and looking every bit the two-time Cy Young winner in the process.

Cashed easily as Detroit won 6-2, the Skubal-form bull point playing out exactly as expected.

Pregame

Detroit opened around -134 on the money line and the market has since eased in to -110, but the Tigers still cashed easily behind a red-hot Skubal. Oakland's lineup, without Rooker for the year, just doesn't have the length to punch back against a starter carrying his form. The price move barely dented how lopsided this actually played out.

The Athletics have dropped four of their last five, getting outscored badly in a brutal home stretch against the Dodgers and Marlins, and the injury list isn't helping. Brent Rooker is done for the year after tearing cartilage in his left knee, ripping the middle-of-the-order thump right out of that lineup, and Tyler Soderstrom is still working back from a hip issue. Ginn's been one of the few bright spots — he flirted with a no-hitter into the 8th inning back in May and has quietly put together a 3.10 ERA season — but he can only do so much when the offense around him keeps stalling.

Detroit, meanwhile, has won 4 of its last 5 and gets to lean on a pitcher trending in exactly the wrong direction for opponents. Skubal has racked up 9 strikeouts in each of his last two outings without issuing a single walk, and the version of him that shows up now looks nothing like a guy just a few starts removed from a procedure on his throwing elbow. Add in the swirling trade deadline chatter around Skubal's future, and every one of these starts before August 3 carries extra weight for a Tigers team clawing back into the playoff picture.

The Tigers jumped out early and tacked on a four-spot in the 6th to put this one away, while the Athletics could never solve Skubal's stuff long enough to make it a real fight.

For Oakland, it's another night where a quality start from Ginn went to waste. For Detroit, it's business as usual against a lineup that's been running on fumes since Rooker went down — and one more reminder of why the Skubal-to-a-contender rumors won't quiet down anytime soon.
