The Braves are 33-16 and they're sending Chris Sale to the hill, which feels less like a pitching matchup and more like a public service announcement. Sale was just named NL Pitcher of the Month for May after a 5-0, 0.56 ERA stretch over five starts, and his season ERA sits at 1.96. The Marlins counter with Janson Junk, who, to be fair, has been quietly fine.

Junk isn't a punchline right now. He's won each of his last two starts and threw six scoreless innings against the Dodgers his last time out. The 4.14 ERA is the season number, not the May number. The problem isn't that Miami doesn't have a starter — the problem is that the other guy is the best pitcher in the National League and Atlanta's offense is averaging better than five runs a game.
The Marlins are 22-27 and they've spent the series getting reminded that the Braves have been the class of the division. They've taken games here and there from Atlanta this year, but the rotation depth just isn't built for stretches like this, especially with Robby Snelling off to see Dr. Keith Meister in Texas. That's never the appointment you want on the calendar.

Atlanta's injury list is genuinely brutal — Sean Murphy out at least eight weeks, Drake Baldwin now on the IL with an oblique strain, Profar gone for the season, Schwellenbach and Smith-Shawver on the 60-day. The fact that the Braves are still 17 games over .500 with that pile of names sidelined tells you everything about how the rest of the roster is producing.
The market sees this the way you'd expect: Sale and the Braves are -186 on the moneyline, -1.5 chalk on the runline, and the total is hanging at 7.5/8. The EV numbers on every side land in the red, which is the polite way of saying the books have this one priced exactly where it should be. Sometimes the smart play is admitting there isn't a smart play.
If you're picking a spot, Miami plus the runline at home with a starter who's actually pitching well isn't insane. But Sale is throwing the way he threw in his Cy Young year, and the Braves are scoring at will. First pitch 5:40 PM ET at loanDepot park.
