On the mound — starting pitchers.

First pitch is 9:05 PM CT at Las Vegas Ballpark, and the matchup on paper is lopsided: Robert Gasser (0-2, 4.73) for the Brewers against J.T. Ginn (3-3, 2.74) for the A's. Gasser is still feeling his way back from 2024 Tommy John surgery; Ginn has been the most reliable arm in Oakland-slash-Sacramento-slash-Vegas's rotation, with a sub-3 ERA and a near no-hitter through 8 against the Angels on his ledger.

Milwaukee comes in 41-23 and rolling — 4 wins in their last 5, the only loss being a 12-9 shootout with the Giants. The A's are 31-35 and have lost 4 of 5, with the lone win a 5-0 shutout in Houston that's looking more and more like a blip. Tuesday's 15-14 marathon featured 6 Athletics homers (Langeliers, Kurtz twice, Heim, Soderstrom twice, Gelof) and they still lost in 12. That stings.

Recent form.

The Brewers bullpen situation is the actual storyline if you care about pitching depth. Carlos Rodriguez just hit the 15-day IL retroactive to May 31. Brian Fitzpatrick has a UCL strain and is seeking a second opinion on Tommy John. DL Hall is out with a left pec issue. Brandon Woodruff is still working back at the Arizona complex. Pat Murphy is duct-taping this thing together and somehow they keep winning anyway.

Injury report — info via ESPN.

The A's have their own problems — Jacob Wilson on the 10-day with a shoulder, Luis Severino out 4-to-6 weeks with a shoulder capsule strain, Aaron Civale just starting a throwing progression, Gunnar Hoglund done for the year after hip surgery. The lineup itself can absolutely cook (see: 14 runs Tuesday) but the rotation behind Ginn is thin and the bullpen has been bleeding leads.

Pinnacle has Milwaukee at -114 on the moneyline with the total at 12.5, which feels like the market splitting the difference between Ginn's form and the fact that this ballpark just hosted 29 runs the night before. If Gasser can't pile up length, the Brewers' patchwork pen gets exposed in a hurry. If he can, you're betting on the better team and the better record. Take the over and don't think about it too hard.
