Jacob Misiorowski (8-2, 1.34) draws Martín Pérez (5-3, 2.90) at 7:15 PM ET in Atlanta, and that pitching mismatch is doing most of the heavy lifting in this preview. Misiorowski is coming off a 9-inning, 1-hit, 15-strikeout shutout of the Phillies on his last turn. Pérez gave Atlanta 5.1 solid innings in his last start against the Mets, but he isn't built to trade zeros with what Milwaukee is rolling out.
The Braves are running on fumes. Atlanta has lost 4 straight and now has a tied game on the books after Wednesday's suspended 0-0 stalemate against San Francisco. Walt Weiss's club is missing Ronald Acuña Jr., catching Joey Bart was just acquired off the IL from Pittsburgh, Michael Harris II is day-to-day with a back issue, and Jurickson Profar is gone for the year on the PED suspension. The lineup card looks thinner every week.

Milwaukee, meanwhile, just took a series from Cleveland and sits at 45-27, a half-game back of Atlanta for the best record in this matchup. Pat Murphy's group has built its run on pitching, and Misiorowski is the headliner — he threw a 103.7 mph fastball earlier in June, the fastest tracked pitch ever from a starter. He has pitched a shutout in 6 of his last 7 starts. The Braves are averaging 2.8 runs per game over their recent skid. The math is not friendly.

Atlanta's best path is what it's always been: get to the Brewers bullpen early. Milwaukee's relief corps is banged up — DL Hall, Carlos Rodriguez, Jared Koenig and Brian Fitzpatrick are all on the IL — so if the Braves can run Misiorowski's pitch count or sneak a lead late, there's a soft underbelly. The problem is getting there. Misiorowski went the full 9 last time out on 95 pitches.
This is the start of a 3-game set, and it's hard to find a worse spot to open one. Atlanta is staring down the hottest pitcher in baseball, a depleted lineup against a quality changeup artist in Pérez, and a fan base that watched 4 in a row slip away. If the Braves are going to flip the vibe, they probably need to do it Saturday or Sunday — not tonight.
