TLDR: The best record in baseball meets the team scuffling near the bottom of the NL West, and Milwaukee didn't get here by accident.

Milwaukee Brewers
  • MLB-best 66-39 record, running away with NL Central
  • Top-5 scoring offense in baseball
  • Just outscored Rockies 19-7 over two games
  • Woodruff out for season, Priester out months
  • Bullpen gutted by IL trips (Kuhnel, Hall, Zastryzny)
  • Sproat carries a 5.09 ERA, inconsistent starts
San Francisco Giants
  • Won 2 of last 3, including a 9-2 blowout win
  • Jung Hoo Lee swinging it well, 3-run homer Saturday
  • Getting plus-money value as home underdog
  • 44-61, near bottom of NL West
  • Offense ranks 25th in MLB in runs scored
  • Chapman, Bader, Cox, Bericoto all injured

Brandon Sproat (3-5, 5.09 ERA) gets the ball for the Brewers looking to build off a homestand that saw them bury the Rockies by a combined 19-7 over two games. Tyler Mahle (2-9, 5.31 ERA) counters for the Giants at Oracle Park, with first pitch set for 6:45 PM PT.

Sproat, a former Mets prospect, has been up and down in his rookie season, but Milwaukee's offense has bailed him out plenty this year — it's a top-5 scoring unit in baseball. Mahle signed in San Francisco off a strong 2025 in Texas, but nothing about his ERA this year matches that track record, and his last outing was a familiar story: cruising for five innings against Kansas City before losing the strike zone in the sixth.

Both rotations are dealing with attrition well beyond their starters tonight. Milwaukee is already without Brandon Woodruff for the season and Quinn Priester for months, and the Giants are without their top infielder and two projected outfielders at the same time.

The Brewers' outfield picture took another hit this week when Sal Frelick got a cortisone shot in his throwing shoulder, and the bullpen has been bled dry by IL trips for Joel Kuhnel, DL Hall, and others. It hasn't mattered much lately — Milwaukee is running away with the NL Central at 66-39 and just closed a homestand outscoring three straight opponents by wide margins.

San Francisco has actually won two of its last three, and Jung Hoo Lee has been the one bright spot, hammering a three-run homer in Saturday's win over the Angels. But Matt Chapman is still without a firm return date, and with Harrison Bader, Jonah Cox and Victor Bericoto all on the shelf too, manager Tony Vitello is patching together an outfield on the fly against a Milwaukee lineup that leads the league in scoring.

This is a gap-in-class matchup on paper — division leader against a team fighting to stay out of the NL West basement — and the Giants need more nights like Saturday's 9-2 win if they want to avoid getting run off their own field this week.
