First pitch is 7:10 PM ET on Monday, June 22, and the probable rotation move puts Brandon Sproat on the bump for Milwaukee opposite Brady Singer for Cincinnati. Sproat is the storyline to watch — he left his last start against Cleveland in the 4th with a hamstring cramp, but Pat Murphy and the team have already said he's good to make this turn. Singer comes in with a 3.15 ERA over his last 4, finally pitching like the guy the Reds traded for.

The Brewers are 10 games up on the Reds in the standings for a reason, and Cincinnati is taking the field without Elly De La Cruz and Ke'Bryan Hayes. Sproat over Singer is a real edge on paper, and Milwaukee's been the better road team. Lay it.

Bigger picture: the Brewers don't really have a weakness right now. They've won 3 of 5, including a 9-4 beatdown of the Guardians, and that's despite a rotation MASH unit that includes Quinn Priester (thoracic outlet surgery, 8-10 months), Brandon Woodruff still rehabbing the shoulder, and Coleman Crow shelved with a flexor strain. Depth like that wins divisions, and Milwaukee has a 10-game cushion in the standings to prove it.

The Reds, meanwhile, are stuck in the mud at 35-38 and just got dunked on 9-1 by the Mets on Wednesday to drop a series at home. They are, however, on the verge of getting their best player back — Elly De La Cruz is set to start a rehab assignment in Triple-A this weekend, with Terry Francona telling reporters the earliest activation is June 23. Translation: he is probably NOT in the lineup for Monday's opener, which is brutal timing for Cincinnati.

Ke'Bryan Hayes (back) is also still on the IL and just started hitting again in Arizona, so the Reds infield is taking the field shorthanded against a Brewers team that punishes mistakes. The bullpen is a little dinged too with Emilio Pagan and Pierce Johnson both working their way back. Singer is going to need to give Francona length.

The bet here is whether you trust the Reds to claw out a series opener at home without their superstar and with a depleted infield. Milwaukee's been the more complete team for two months and Sproat's stuff has flashed even on the bad days. If you want a reason to fade the chalk, it's the home park — Great American is a launching pad, Sproat is a 2nd-year arm, and one swing changes this game in a hurry.
