On the mound — starting pitchers.

Kyle Harrison (8-1, 2.50 ERA) takes the ball at 6:10 PM CT for Milwaukee against David Peterson (3-6, 6.09), who the Cubs acquired from the Mets on June 25 and will be making his first start in a Chicago uniform. Harrison has been one of the cleaner arms in baseball this season — 87 strikeouts against just 18 walks across 72 innings — and is coming off a 6.1-inning, 7-strikeout effort against Atlanta in which he issued zero walks.

Peterson's last outing was June 21: 4 innings, 4 earned runs, 6 hits against the Phillies. Manager Craig Counsell is banking on the change of scenery helping a guy who was an All-Star just last season. The pitch is not crazy — Peterson is a ground-ball pitcher, and the Cubs' infield is stocked with Gold Glove winners who can mop up contact. But asking him to deliver a quality start in his first game in a new uniform, against Harrison, at a park where the Brewers have not lost to Chicago once this season, is a steep ask right out of the gate.

Recent form.

The Cubs bring real offensive momentum into this series. They swept the Mets 4-0 last week, outscoring New York 33-17 across all 4 games. Dansby Swanson went off in the June 24 doubleheader — 11 RBI across both games, a Cubs franchise record. Then came Friday's Game 1 against Milwaukee: a 2-6 loss with very little drama. The Brewers are 50-29 and lead the NL Central by 7 games. They swept Chicago out of Wrigley last month and haven't dropped a single game to the Cubs this year. Saturday night figures to look a lot like Friday night.

Chicago's pitching situation is genuinely bleak. Justin Steele is done for the season. Cade Horton, Edward Cabrera, and Ben Brown are all on the IL. Jameson Taillon is a hamstring away from a maybe-before-the-break return. The rotation is so short that the front office went out and acquired Peterson — a pitcher with a 6.09 ERA who was available — just to fill a Saturday slot. Milwaukee is dealing with none of that. Harrison, Jacob Misiorowski, and a full healthy staff swept Cincinnati last week without even needing their top 2 arms. The gap between these rotations right now is not subtle.
