Colin Rea (4-3, 4.83) draws the short straw against Paul Skenes (6-4, 3.00) at PNC Park, first pitch 5:40 PM CT. Pittsburgh is a heavy home favorite at -166 with the total sitting at 7.5 on Pinnacle and 8.5 at DK — books clearly expect the Skenes version of this game, not the one Rea is hoping to drag into a slugfest.

Rea is the kind of arm the Cubs can live with on most nights and absolutely cannot on this one. His last time out he went 7 strong against Houston, gave up just 4 hits and 3 earned, and still took the loss — a fair summary of Chicago's last week in general. Skenes, for his part, is coming off one of his worst starts of the year: 5 innings, 9 hits, 4 earned in Toronto. Bounce-back spot at home against a lineup that just got no-doubt-ed by Mitch Keller on Tuesday.

The series has been a roller coaster strapped to a tilt-a-whirl. Pirates took the opener 2-1, hung a 12-spot in game 2, and then watched the Cubs return the favor 10-4 on Wednesday to avoid the sweep. Chicago is 1-4 in its last 5 with the only win being that 10-run outburst — strip that out and the offense has scored 7 runs in 4 games. Pittsburgh, meanwhile, is 3-2 in its last 5 and gets to roll out its ace to close the set.

Injury-wise it remains brutal for the Cubs rotation — Justin Steele, Cade Horton, Matthew Boyd and Edward Cabrera are all parked, which is exactly why Rea is here in the first place. Pittsburgh is sweating a Ryan O'Hearn quad and waiting on Jared Jones to potentially come off the 60-day IL, but Skenes makes most of that noise. Joey Bart is still down behind the plate.

Public money on DraftKings is pounding the Pirates side — 77% of spread bets and 59% of moneyline tickets on Pittsburgh — and the over is getting the handle (88%) even with the line stretched a full run above Pinnacle. None of the markets show real edge per the EV figures, so this is a watch-the-game spot more than a fire-in bet. Give me Skenes punching out 8-plus and the Cubs hoping Rea can survive 5.
