Chicago Cubs at Boston Red Sox Game 2

By JR·3 min read

TLDR: A nor'easter pushed the Cubs and Red Sox into a Friday split doubleheader, and the nightcap puts 2 teams in very different spots under the lights at Fenway. Boston is already in, and Chicago is still scrapping for a National League Wild Card spot.

The Cubs and Red Sox play the nightcap of a weather-forced doubleheader. Chicago is still in the NL Wild Card race, and Boston has already clinched. Both Peterson and Bello are coming off strong starts. Boston's lineup has scored 5 runs in 5 games and keeps losing hitters, while Chicago's bullpen is badly depleted and pitches the 1:05 PM ET opener before this game.

Cubs
  • Peterson allowed 1 run over 6 innings vs Reds last time
  • Bregman resumed hitting, still day-to-day
  • Still chasing an NL Wild Card spot
  • Scored 2 runs in each of last 3 games
  • Bullpen missing Hodge, Maton, Harvey, Miller and more
  • Gausman's shoulder still sore, return uncertain
Red Sox
  • Bello: 8 IP, 11 K, 0 BB in last start
  • Pitching staff allowed 1 run or fewer in 3 of 5
  • 5 runs total in the last 5 games
  • Contreras hasn't swung; Yoshida, Casas, Mead, White out
  • Already clinched, with a Wild Card game next week

David Peterson (9-8, 4.96) and Brayan Bello (6-7, 4.49) get the second game, with first pitch at 6:05 PM ET. Both ERAs undersell how each pitcher threw last time out. Peterson gave up 1 run over 6 innings against the Reds and needed only 83 pitches. Bello was better than that: 8 innings at Tampa, 11 strikeouts, 0 walks, 1 run. He still took a no-decision because the Red Sox scored 1 run behind him and lost 2-1.

That last part is Boston's whole problem right now. The Red Sox have scored 5 runs total in their last 5 games, and the lineup keeps losing bats. Willson Contreras said he hasn't been able to swing for 2 days because of his hand, and he's openly worried about being ready for Game 1 of the Wild Card Series next week. Masataka Yoshida, Triston Casas, Curtis Mead and Eli White are all out as well. Chicago's lineup news is better. Alex Bregman resumed hitting and Craig Counsell said it "went well," though he's still day-to-day with the face injury. The board has this close to a coin flip, with the Cubs slightly ahead.

The stakes are lopsided. Boston clinched a playoff berth before the schedule change, and WEEI has already written up Bello as a possible key postseason piece. That makes this start look a little like an audition for October. The Cubs were tied with the Padres and Phillies in the NL Wild Card race when the doubleheader was set, so every game still counts for them. Both teams play the 1:05 PM ET opener first, so whatever that game does to the bullpens carries straight into this one.

Chicago is 3-2 in the last 5 and won their last game. They've taken 1 of the first 3 against the Marlins after going 2-0 against the Reds, where they scored 14 runs in 2 games. The bats have cooled since: 2 runs in each of the 3 Marlins games. Boston is 1-4 in the last 5 and lost their last game. They were 0-2 at Tampa and have taken 1 of the first 3 against Cleveland, and the lone win was a 1-0 game. The Red Sox pitching has been good enough to win lately. The Red Sox hitting has not.

  • 60-Day-ILZack Kelly (RP) — The Red Sox recalled Kelly (elbow) from Triple-A Worcester and placed him on the 60-day injured list Tuesday.07/21

The Cubs' injury list is mostly pitchers. Kevin Gausman says his left shoulder is still sore and he doesn't know when he'll be available. Justin Steele won't be activated from the 60-day IL this weekend. Porter Hodge, Phil Maton, Hunter Harvey, Shelby Miller, Ben Brown and Riley Martin are all on the 60-day IL, which leaves a thin bullpen that has to cover 2 games in 1 day. Boston's rotation depth is thin too: Garrett Crochet isn't expected back before the regular season ends, and Tanner Houck and Johan Oviedo are still pitching rehab outings in Worcester.

The forecast calls for 63 degrees, clouds and a 15 mph wind at Fenway, which is about the best the weekend is going to offer. Watch how deep Peterson and Bello can go. After an afternoon game, the team whose starter gets through 6 innings is the team that doesn't have to push its bullpen further than it can handle.
