Arizona Diamondbacks at San Francisco Giants

TLDR: One of these teams is scrapping for a playoff spot with half its rotation on the injured list. The other is just playing out the string at Oracle Park. Neither situation looks pretty on the mound tonight.

Arizona Diamondbacks
  • Won 2 of 3 vs Cubs on a walk-off HR and a scoreless gem
  • Sit right on the fringe of the NL Wild Card cutoff
  • Marte trending toward a return within days
  • Starting Cabrera, who hasn't pitched in the majors since July 8
  • Rotation reduced to injury reclamations and call-ups
  • Troy and Gurriel still rehabbing, lineup shorthanded
San Francisco Giants
  • Roupp working into the 6th in three straight outings
  • Took 2 of 3 from the Reds before series finale
  • Nothing to lose, auditioning young players freely
  • 54-79, out of any playoff contention
  • Just lost Whisenhunt for the season to a torn UCL
  • Adames, Chapman, Bader and others all out for the year or extended stretch

Jose Cabrera gets the ball for Arizona in a start nobody would've predicted a month ago. He was solid enough in June and July to win the Diamondbacks' monthly pitching honors, then got rocked for 4 earned runs in 4.1 innings against San Diego on July 8 and got optioned to Triple-A Reno the next day. He hasn't started a big-league game since. With Corbin Burnes, Zac Gallen, Ryne Nelson and Michael Soroka all still working back from arm issues, Arizona simply doesn't have anyone else. Landen Roupp takes the ball for San Francisco, and first pitch is 6:45 PM PT at Oracle Park.

Roupp's 7-13 record undersells what he's actually doing right now. He's worked into the 6th inning in three straight starts, giving the Giants length their bullpen badly needs after a beat-up week. San Francisco's pitching depth is in worse shape than the won-loss column even shows — Carson Whisenhunt just found out he tore his UCL and is done for the year, and Adrian Houser is getting his arm checked out. Roupp eating innings matters more than usual with that group covering for him.

Arizona is fighting for its playoff life while San Francisco has nothing to play for but reps, and that gap shows up everywhere except the scoreboard so far — the Diamondbacks sit right on the fringe of the NL Wild Card picture, a game back of the cutoff as of this week, while the Giants are deep into a lost season under Tony Vitello.

Vitello hasn't sugarcoated where his team is. After one recent loss he called the effort sloppy, saying it "had the feel of a Junior College game rather than a big league game." That's not a knock on effort so much as a reality check — this roster is missing Willy Adames, Matt Chapman, Harrison Bader and now Whisenhunt, and the front office has already signaled it's leaning into development over results down the stretch.

Arizona, meanwhile, is riding actual momentum into this series. The Diamondbacks dropped the opener of their set with the Cubs 7-0 before answering with two straight wins — a walk-off pinch-hit homer from rookie Ryan Waldschmidt in one, then 7 scoreless innings from Eduardo Rodriguez in the other. Torey Lovullo called himself "very pleased" with how his club responded, and that's the kind of stretch a fringe wild card team needs when its rotation is falling apart around it.

Ketel Marte is trending back soon, which would be a real lift for an Arizona lineup that's had to piece things together without him, Tommy Troy and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. For now, both clubs are leaning on whoever's healthy and hoping the innings hold up. This one is more about who can survive the middle of the game than who looks better on paper walking in.
