TLDR: Arizona's still fighting for October. San Francisco is just trying to get to the offseason. That gap is the whole story tonight at Oracle Park.

Arizona Diamondbacks
  • Still in the thick of the wild-card race
  • Owns 8 of this season's meetings with San Francisco
  • Offense has carried the club through August
  • Ketel Marte, their best weapon vs SF, still out
  • Arenado day-to-day with thumb inflammation
  • Rotation stripped bare behind a rookie in Drake
San Francisco Giants
  • Beat this same Arizona team in the last meeting
  • Tidwell has been sharp since his recall
  • Nothing to lose, can run the bullpen full-out
  • Mathematically buried at 55-79
  • Lost Willy Adames for likely the rest of the season
  • Down a catcher and dealing with Jung Hoo Lee's status

Kohl Drake takes the ball for the Diamondbacks, opposite Blade Tidwell for the Giants, with first pitch at 7:15 PM PT. Drake is still getting his footing at the big-league level — his last turn against the Padres lasted just 3.2 innings and cost him 3 earned runs — while Tidwell is trending the other way, coming off a start against the Red Sox where he worked 5.2 shutout innings with 7 strikeouts.

Arizona's lineup is banged up in exactly the wrong spots for this particular opponent. Ketel Marte has been an absolute menace against San Francisco pitching this year, and he's not walking through that door tonight — and Nolan Arenado is day-to-day with thumb inflammation after getting scratched from Thursday's lineup. San Francisco is already without Willy Adames for what looks like the rest of the season and is still missing catcher Jesus Rodriguez, but a club with nothing left to play for can lean on its bullpen without worrying about the next 6 weeks.

None of that changes the bigger picture, though. Arizona's still the better team on paper, with an offense that's carried it through August, and it owns this matchup — 8 wins over San Francisco already this season. The Giants have exactly one recent data point to hang their hat on.

That data point came the last time these 2 teams met, a 6-1 Giants win. Arizona is looking to atone for it tonight, while San Francisco — playing out a lost season — will take any validation it can get. Beating a wild-card hopeful twice in a row would be a genuine highlight in an otherwise forgettable year at Oracle Park.

Marte is expected back for the Diamondbacks' next series, against Philadelphia, which does Arizona no good tonight. The swing is worse on San Francisco's side: Adames' elbow sprain is expected to cost him 3 to 4 weeks, a timeline that all but ends his season, and even a last-place team feels a shortstop void like that. Two rosters missing exactly the pieces that used to define them — that's the actual matchup underneath the scoreboard.
