Arizona is scrapping for its playoff life in a jammed NL Wild Card race. Kansas City is just playing out the string. That gap in stakes is the whole story when these two meet again in Kansas City.

These two also meet Tuesday, September 8, with Corbin Burnes making his 2026 season debut for Arizona in that game — his first big-league mound appearance since June of last year, after an elbow issue and then a shoulder strain kept pushing the timeline back. Arizona hasn't named a starter for Wednesday, September 9, yet. Kansas City is turning to Daniel Lynch IV (4-5, 3.51 ERA), whose road to a rotation spot wasn't the plan — he was KC's best reliever for four months before season-ending elbow surgeries wiped out Cole Ragans, Stephen Kolek and Luinder Avila and forced him into a starter's workload.
Lynch's transition has been uneven. He was excellent out of the pen, but his last time on the mound — 5 innings, 5 earned runs, 0 strikeouts against Toronto — fits a stretch where the stuff that worked in relief hasn't always translated to length. On the other side, Bobby Witt Jr. is putting together another All-Star-caliber year and remains the engine of a Kansas City lineup that otherwise doesn't have much left to play for, even with Maikel Garcia working his way back from a hamstring strain and Jac Caglianone day-to-day with an elbow issue.
Arizona's margin for error is thinner than the standings suggest. The Diamondbacks are clinging to roughly a half-game edge for the final NL Wild Card spot, with Miami, St. Louis, Pittsburgh and Cincinnati all lurking — this is the fourth straight year it's come down to the wire for this group. The bullpen behind Burnes has been in flux too, with the ninth inning passed around since Arizona moved off its closer in late July.
Arizona is 4-1 in the last 5 as of today, having won 3 straight, though that stretch includes a series against these same Royals that still has games left to play before Wednesday. Kansas City, at 2-3 in the last 5, dropped its most recent game. Neither number is fixed until the intervening games are actually played — but the shape of the two seasons is clear enough: one club is jockeying for October, the other is auditioning arms for next year.
Arizona's pitching depth is starting to fill back in at the right time — Michael Soroka is also expected to be activated during this series, and Zac Gallen has been building up in simulated games as he works back from his own elbow injury. None of that fixes the Diamondbacks' bullpen questions overnight, but it's a reminder that the roster trying to close out a Wild Card race in September isn't the same one that started it.
