Justin Wrobleski (9-2, 2.71 ERA) gets the ball in Game 2 of this Sacramento series, squaring off against Athletics veteran Jeffrey Springs (3-7, 5.52 ERA), with first pitch at 6:40 PM PT. On paper this matchup strongly favors Los Angeles — and recent history makes it look even more one-sided.
Wrobleski has quietly become one of the best stories in the NL this year. Dave Roberts is openly lobbying for his All-Star inclusion, and the numbers back it up: he's allowed 2 or fewer runs in 10 of his 13 starts, went 7.0 innings allowing just 2 runs against Minnesota in his last outing, and has posted a 10:2 K:BB in June. Roberts said point-blank that 'you can't argue the numbers' for his guy. Springs is in a very different place — a 10.54 ERA over his last 5 starts and a well-documented tendency to give up home runs in clusters. These aren't 2 pitchers at similar points in their seasons.

The Athletics are playing shorthanded and have been for a while. Jacob Wilson (shoulder) and Tyler Soderstrom (hip) are both on the 10-day IL, Brent Rooker isn't doing baseball activities yet with a bad knee, and Zack Gelof is sidelined with a right hand contusion. Luis Severino is on the 60-day IL, and Gunnar Hoglund had hip surgery and is done for 2026. That's a lot of lineup and rotation depth sitting in the trainer's room. Oakland has dropped 3 straight going into tonight and sits at 40-45.

The Dodgers carry their own lengthy IL — Glasnow, Snell, Will Smith, and several relievers are all out — but none of it has slowed them down. They went to San Diego and took 2 of 3, including a 15-3 blowout, then came to Sacramento and handled Game 1 without much drama. At 55-30 this team is operating in a different stratosphere than the A's. Wrobleski gets about as favorable a pitching spot as you'll find on the schedule.
