On the mound — starting pitchers.

The Dodgers walk into Petco at 29-19. The Padres sit at 29-18. That's a half-game gap, a sold-out crowd, and the first time these two have shared a field in 2026. The buildup writes itself.

Emmet Sheehan gets the ball for LA on four days rest, coming off a tidy 6-inning, 6-strikeout, 2-run win over the Giants last Thursday. It's his first career start at Petco and only his second look at this Padres lineup, which is the kind of unknown San Diego usually feasts on at home.

The Padres counter with Griffin Canning, and that's where this gets interesting. Canning is 3 starts into his return from last June's Achilles surgery, and the 10.64 ERA tells most of the story. The first one back on May 3 against the White Sox was actually sharp — 5 innings, 7 strikeouts, 1 earned run. Everything since has been a mess. Either he settles in tonight or San Diego's bullpen is getting an early phone call.

The injury room is doing a lot of heavy lifting on both sides. The Dodgers are running out a rotation without Snell, Glasnow, Stone, Miller, or Knack, and the bullpen has more 60-day tags than healthy arms. The Padres are without Darvish, Musgrove, Pivetta, Marquez, and Waldron — basically the entire rotation they paid for. Sheehan vs. Canning isn't a marquee pitching matchup because nobody has marquee pitching matchups available right now.

Pinnacle has the Dodgers at -146 with the total at 8.5. DraftKings has the same moneyline juice but moved the total down to 7, which is a notable gap between books on a game with two starters posting an ERA over 4.50. The public is hammering the over at DK (76% of bets) — read that how you want with Canning on the mound.

Tuesday night in San Diego, half a game on the line, and a Dodgers staff held together with tape facing a Padres starter who's either turning the corner or about to get yanked in the 3rd. Good baseball game.
