Trevor McDonald (2-3, 4.50) gets the ball for San Francisco against Jameson Taillon (2-5, 5.13) under the lights at Wrigley, with first pitch at 7:30 PM CT on Sunday Night Baseball. Pinnacle has the Cubs as a slim -114 favorite on a total of 7.5 — a respectful nod to Taillon at home and not much more, given he's been homer-prone all year.
This series has been a split personality. Friday turned into one of the uglier afternoons Wrigley has seen in a while — Giants 18, Cubs 3, seven home runs, Matt Chapman with a grand slam, Edward Cabrera lit up for 8 runs before getting the hook in the 3rd. Then Saturday flipped entirely, with the Cubs grinding out a 3-2 win. So we get a rubber game with both clubhouses still processing what the hell happened 24 hours apart.

The bigger story here is the Cubs themselves. Chicago started 26-12, looked like a problem in the NL Central, and has spent the last five weeks giving it all back — they've now lost 18 of their last 25 entering this game, including a winless homestand before the Giants showed up. A 34-31 record looks fine on paper. The vibes at Wrigley do not match the paper.
San Francisco isn't exactly a juggernaut at 26-39 — fourth in the NL West, miles behind the Dodgers — but the bats have woken up on this road trip. Cubs starter Taillon has been the rough spot of Chicago's rotation, and McDonald has been steady-if-unspectacular, going 5 innings of 3-run ball against Milwaukee in his last outing. Neither guy projects to dominate, which is why the over/under sits at 7.5.

The IL lists tell the rest of the story. The Giants are running out a bullpen held together with duct tape — Randy Rodriguez, Hayden Birdsong, Jose Butto and Rowan Wick are all 60-day guys, with Tyler Mahle now joining the rotation casualties. The Cubs lost Justin Steele until after the All-Star break and Matthew Boyd is still working back. Whichever bullpen blinks first probably loses this one.
Take the Cubs at -114 if you trust Taillon to keep the ball in the yard at Wrigley, which is a real ask. Take the Giants at +103 if you think Chicago's slide isn't done yet. The honest read: this is a coin flip on national TV between two teams trending in opposite directions from where they expected to be in June.
