The Giants are a mess. 20-29, Logan Webb still on the IL with a knee, Heliot Ramos shelved with a quad strain, and now Jung Hoo Lee getting scratched from Tuesday's lineup with a back issue per Bob Nightengale. Tony Vitello's first year in San Francisco is going about as smoothly as the bullpen's MRI schedule, which is to say not at all — six relievers on the 60-day IL is not a typo.

- 60-Day-ILJustin Martinez RP — Martinez (elbow) tossed a bullpen session Friday, Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic reports.
Arizona, meanwhile, has quietly won 4 of its last 5 and sits at 24-23 despite its own absurd injury list. Corbin Burnes is still working back from elbow trouble, James McCann is looking at 4-to-6 weeks with a quad, and Pavin Smith and Justin Martinez are nowhere close. They're doing it with duct tape and Merrill Kelly suddenly remembering how to pitch.

About Kelly — that 5.91 ERA is a lie at this point. He threw the first complete game of his career on May 17 against Colorado, 4 hits, no walks, 100 pitches, 73% strikes. The Cubs roughed him up for 6 on May 11, but bracketing that he's been the version Arizona thought it was getting. Tyler Mahle, on the other hand, just got tagged for 5 runs in 5 innings by the A's after a Nick Kurtz 3-run shot, and his last two outings are the reason that 5.59 ERA exists.
The market knows all this. Arizona is the home favorite, Pinnacle has it at -126, and the spread money is piling on the D-backs at 78% of bets and 89% of handle on DraftKings. The over/under split is wider than usual too — the public is hammering the over on a 9-run total with two pitchers carrying ERAs north of 5.50 between them. That part tracks.
If you're squinting for a Giants angle, it's that Mahle has flashed — 8 strikeouts in 5.2 against the Pirates on May 10 was the look — and Chase Field is not the Coors-lite punching bag people imagine. But asking a depleted lineup missing Lee and Ramos to chase Kelly off the mound is the kind of plan that sounds better in the morning meeting than it plays out at 2:40 local.
