San Francisco Giants at Cleveland Guardians

TLDR: The Guardians jumped on Carson Whisenhunt early and never let up, burying San Francisco 8-1 at Progressive Field. For a Giants club missing its starting shortstop, the margin for error was zero from the first inning on.

San Francisco Giants
  • Logan Webb still anchors the rotation when healthy
  • Won a game 7-1 over Colorado days earlier
  • Whisenhunt's last outing was his cleanest in weeks
  • Sit at 51-74, one of MLB's biggest underachievers
  • Adames (back) out of the lineup again
  • Pitching depth beyond Webb is a real question mark
Cleveland Guardians
  • Foster Griffin (14-4, 3.18 ERA) anchoring the rotation since arriving via trade
  • Won their last game before this one
  • Reportedly own the easiest remaining schedule in the league
  • Sitting several games back in a crowded wild card chase
  • Lost 3 of their prior 5 before this game
  • DeLauter (hamstring) and Holderman (wrist) both banged up

Foster Griffin took the ball for Cleveland at 6:40 PM ET off one of the best stretches of his season, while Carson Whisenhunt was tasked with keeping a thin Giants lineup within shouting distance early. It was never much of a fight.

San Francisco arrived without Willy Adames, whose lower back has been barking for weeks and kept him out of the lineup again Tuesday, and Cleveland was missing its own regular in Chase DeLauter (hamstring). Neither absence was a secret walking in, and the market had Cleveland as a heavy favorite before first pitch reflecting exactly that gap.

It played out that way from the jump. Cleveland strung together 3 runs in the first and 2 more in the second, and by the time Whisenhunt left the mound the game had stopped being competitive.

Griffin needed just 6 innings to rack up 6 strikeouts and keep the Giants off the board apart from a lone second-inning run, extending his run as one of the best in-season pickups Cleveland made at the deadline after arriving from Washington.

For Cleveland, the win keeps them alive in a wild card chase where they reportedly own the easiest closing schedule in baseball. For San Francisco, it's just the latest data point in a lost season under Tony Vitello, who's been candid that this stretch "ain't fun."
