Oneil Cruz kept hammering singles into the mess for 3 RBI, and Brandon Lowe answered a late Giants push with a home run in the seventh. San Francisco clawed back with 5 more in the eighth to make it a game again, but Pittsburgh pushed across the winning run in the ninth on a throwing error and held on, 13-12.
It's the kind of night that erases whatever the box score usually promises about a Cy Young-caliber arm and a well above-average one. Skenes came in off a scoreless 6-inning outing against San Diego and still got hit around for 5 earned on the day; Webb came in with a clean prior start against Cincinnati and got run out of the building before he'd faced 10 batters. Individual form only tells you so much once an inning like that third one starts snowballing.
Both clubs are well outside the playoff picture — Pittsburgh at 67-71, San Francisco at 57-81 — which is part of why a game this chaotic still has the feel of two teams playing out the string rather than fighting for anything. The injury lists on both sides only reinforce it: San Francisco is picking through a rotation and bullpen gutted by season-ending moves, and Pittsburgh is monitoring its own list of arms and now a catcher spot as September rolls on.
