Tanner Bibee (2-9, 3.96 ERA) got the ball for Cleveland trying to shake off a brutal July, while Eury Pérez (5-6, 3.70) started for Miami fresh off arguably his best outing of the year. The Marlins had every reason to feel good about their odds behind him.

It missed — Miami's bats went quiet and Cleveland walked out of loanDepot Park with the win for the second straight day.
Pregame
We backed the Marlins at -143 when this went up, leaning on the fact that Miami had been the best team in baseball since June began and had Eury Pérez on a heater. The price has since ticked to -149, which tells you the market still liked Miami's spot even against a division contender on the road. Cleveland's lineup missing Jose Ramirez made the home side feel like the safer moneyline anchor.
Bibee has been living dangerously all month, and his last time out against the White Sox on July 5 was ugly — 4 innings, 6 earned runs, more hard contact than a guy trying to save a rotation spot wants to see. Pérez, on the other hand, was rolling: 7 perfect innings against Oakland his last time out before a no-hit bid got broken up late, and Miami still won that one 9-8. Two very different trend lines walked into this one.

Jose Ramirez remains out for Cleveland, still working back from having part of a hamate bone removed from his hand next month at the earliest, and Tim Herrin is shelved with an elbow issue that at least came back clean on X-rays. Miami's dealing with its own bullpen attrition, missing multiple relievers to injury while Owen Caissie nurses a calf strain. Neither lineup is at full strength, which made this one more about who could survive the dents.
