TLDR: The Tampa Bay Rays have been sitting since they swept the Yankees. The Cleveland Guardians got to the ALCS by surviving a 5-game ALDS against the White Sox in which the road team won the first 4. They meet Monday, October 12 at Tropicana Field, and the two clubs could not be arriving in more different shape.

The 98-64 Rays host the 85-77 Guardians in ALCS Game 1 at Tropicana Field on Monday, October 12. Tampa Bay comes in rested after a 3-game sweep of the Yankees built on pitching and a bullpen that Bryan Baker anchored. Cleveland arrives 2 days after winning ALDS Game 5, with ace Gavin Williams used on back-to-back days and a bullpen already missing 2 arms. Neither starter had been named and the board had no prices when this was written.

Cleveland Guardians
  • Won 3 straight to close out the White Sox
  • Game 5 staff held Chicago to 3 hits
  • Scored 9 runs in back-to-back road games
  • Williams used on back-to-back days, not ready for Game 1
  • Only 1 day off after a winner-take-all game
  • Holderman and Walters out, so the bullpen is thin
Tampa Bay Rays
  • Almost a week of rest after the sweep
  • Baker saved all 3 ALDS games
  • Rasmussen took a no-hitter into the 8th in the ALDS opener
  • McClanahan's forearm keeps him off the roster
  • Scored 10 runs total in the 3 ALDS games
  • Long layoff could cost the hitters some timing

Neither side has named a Game 1 starter, and Cleveland's choice is already narrowed by how it got here. Gavin Williams, the arm Cleveland would want for an opener, closed out Game 4 and then started Game 5 the next day, so he will not be ready Monday. The Guardians will have to piece together the front of this series without their best pitcher at full strength. Kevin Cash hasn't committed either, but Drew Rasmussen took a no-hitter into the 8th inning of the ALDS opener against New York and would be on 8 days' rest, which makes him the obvious candidate if Cash goes the expected way.

Tampa Bay won the ALDS in tight games. Their 3 wins over the Yankees came by 1-0, 5-2 and 4-3, and the clincher in the Bronx was settled by a Ryan Vilade solo homer and a go-ahead 2-run shot from Victor Mesa Jr., with Nick Martinez getting 11 outs and Bryan Baker saving all 3 games. Cleveland's offense swings much harder from game to game. It was shut out at home to open the ALDS, put up 9 runs in each of the 2 games in Chicago, and then won Game 5 2-0 with both runs coming in the 4th. First pitch is 8:00 PM ET, and the board has no numbers posted yet.

The schedule is the biggest storyline here. The Rays finished the Yankees off on October 7 and have had almost a week to reset their rotation and rest a bullpen that Cash leaned on hard in New York. Cleveland played a winner-take-all game on Saturday, flies to St. Petersburg, and plays again Monday with a pitching staff that just used its ace on back-to-back days. That rest gap is the biggest thing separating these 2 clubs going into Game 1.

On the season, the gap is real. Tampa Bay went 98-64 and Cleveland went 85-77. The Guardians did end the White Sox series having won 3 straight, and the Game 5 shutout, where Williams and the bullpen held Chicago to 3 hits, was their best pitching of October. Cleveland has also been at its best with its back against the wall, which matters against a Rays team that hasn't trailed in a series yet this postseason.

Cleveland's bullpen is short-handed. Colin Holderman is headed for season-ending wrist surgery and Andrew Walters had UCL repair, so a relief corps that already had to cover Game 5 has fewer arms to use. Rhys Hoskins is still out with his back, which keeps a right-handed power bat out of the lineup. Tampa Bay's injury list is longer but mostly old. The one that matters now is Shane McClanahan, who was left off the ALDS roster with a forearm issue, and the Rays still swept New York without him.
