The Mariners (26-29) are not playing well, the Athletics (27-27) are not playing well, and somebody has to win this game. That's the energy. Cal Raleigh is on the IL with an oblique, the lineup is being held together with tape and adductor PRP shots, and the visiting club is leaning on a starter who has barely been touched all year.

Emerson Hancock has been the most pleasant surprise on Seattle's staff. He opened 2026 with 6 hitless innings and 9 strikeouts against Cleveland and posted a 0.71 ERA across his first 2 starts before the workload caught up. His season ERA sits at 3.07 with a tidy 1.06 WHIP — for a guy whose role was genuinely up for debate in spring, that'll play. Worth noting he had to exit his April 21 start against this same Athletics club with a shoulder issue, so the visual today matters.
Luis Severino's line (2-5, 4.23) looks ugly, but he's been pitching better than the W-L suggests. His last time out he punched out a season-high 10 Angels over 7 innings and gave up only 2 earned. The bigger story with Sev is that he spent most of last year complaining — fairly — about the Sutter Health Park setup, and the A's spent the offseason adding a connected clubhouse extension and replacing the field. So this is more or less the version of pitching in Sacramento he asked for.
The market has this thing essentially pick'em, which feels right. DraftKings is hanging a 10.5 total against Pinnacle's 9.5 — that's a full run of disagreement, and the sharper number is the lower one. Public money is piling on the A's on the runline and the under, neither of which carries any positive EV on our model. There is no bet to make here; this is a game to watch, not chase.

The injury card tells the real story. Seattle is without Raleigh, Brendan Donovan (groin, weeks away after a PRP injection), and a chunk of its bullpen depth. The A's are missing Jacob Wilson, Max Muncy, and Denzel Clarke, though all three are at least back in baseball activities. Neither side is whole. Whichever lineup scratches together a couple of extra-base hits off a guy throwing strikes probably takes it.
Pick a side if you must, but the cleaner read is just: Hancock has earned the benefit of the doubt, Severino is rounding into form, and a 9.5 total in a half-built minor-league park with two short-handed lineups is not the over-bettor's dream it looks like on paper.
