Bryan Woo (7-6, 4.23) got the ball for Seattle looking to build off a hot stretch, while Max Meyer (9-1, 2.58) took the mound for Miami still chasing history. First pitch went at 6:40 PM ET at loanDepot Park.

Hit — Miami found a way to 6-5 even after Seattle's late rally, exactly the kind of grind-it-out win Meyer's arm was supposed to buy them.

Pregame

We backed the Marlins at -121 on the strength of Meyer's historic season, and even with sharp money flowing to Miami pregame, the price still undersold just how good he's been. Woo's inconsistency made him a live dog on paper but not one we trusted against this version of Meyer.

Meyer has been the story of the Marlins' season. He came in off a hard-luck loss to Colorado where he allowed just 1 earned run over 6 innings, and Miami has built its whole summer around trusting him every fifth day. Woo, meanwhile, is the definition of boom-or-bust this year — capable of stretches of scoreless ball but also prone to blowups, and his last outing against the Angels was one of the good ones: 6.1 innings, 2 earned, 5 strikeouts.

Miami came in as the market's favorite on the moneyline and the run line, with sharp money piling onto the Marlins pregame. That price reflected Meyer's dominance more than anything Seattle's lineup was doing, and it set up a game where the number felt more lopsided than the actual talent gap.

Seattle's lineup is banged up. Julio Rodriguez is out on the concussion IL after taking a throw to the head, and both Brendan Donovan and Rob Refsnyder are shelved too, so the Mariners were already playing shorthanded against one of the league's toughest arms. Still, this team had won 4 of its last 5 coming in, including a run of shutouts against Toronto, so there was real feel-good momentum even without the injured names in the lineup.

Miami's bullpen has taken hits of its own, with Anthony Bender, Josh Ekness and Andrew Nardi all out, which made a clean final few innings anything but guaranteed. And it showed — the Marlins led with 2 runs in the second, but Seattle clawed back with a 3-run 8th to make it a game before Miami found an answer in the bottom of the 8th and again in the 9th to seal it 6-5.

Meyer stays unbeaten in his last 15 decisions and Miami improves to 49-42, keeping pace in a tight NL wild card picture. For Seattle, it's a tough one to swallow — the offense showed fight late, but leaving Miami with a series loss against an ace on this kind of run stings a little more given the record.
