None of that has slowed Boston's summer overall. Since firing Alex Cora back in April after a rough start, the Red Sox have played their way into wild-card contention under Tracy, and Fenway still meant something in September even with the injury list piling up. Seattle, on the other hand, had long since been playing out the string — but that didn't make getting run over any easier to swallow.
Seattle Mariners at Boston Red Sox
TLDR: Seattle walked into Fenway on a five-game skid with nothing left to play for but pride. It found some in a hurry.

- Woo has a strong history against this Red Sox roster
- Lineup showed life with a big early inning
- 64-74 and out of playoff contention
- Bullpen down multiple relievers to injury
- 54-37 turnaround under Tracy since April
- Playing meaningful, wild-card-shape baseball in September
- Rookie starter making his first outing for the club
- Rutschman out with an elbow issue that may linger all season
Bryan Woo, sitting at 9-9 with a 4.25 ERA, took the ball for Seattle trying to snap that skid himself. Across the field, Boston turned to Jedixson Paez, making just his first Red Sox start after the club recalled him from Triple-A Worcester earlier in the day — a rookie with all of three big league appearances to his name, all with the White Sox, before this one. First pitch went off at 6:45 PM ET.
Boston still didn't have Adley Rutschman behind the plate. The catcher has been out with a hyperextended right elbow, and interim manager Chad Tracy has said the discomfort could linger the rest of the season. The bullpen took another hit hours before the game when Tyron Guerrero landed on the 15-day injured list with shoulder inflammation, thinning a relief corps that was already patching holes. A rookie making his organizational debut walking into that mix wasn't exactly a market-mover in Boston's favor.
