The Marlins dropped the finale to Boston, 4-2, at loanDepot park on August 24, but the loss came at the end of a week Miami went 3-2 in overall. Before it, Miami swept a three-game set from the Washington Nationals, winning 3-2, 4-2 and 6-2 from August 21 through August 23.

Xavier Edwards gave the Marlins the lead in the seventh inning during that stretch, per @TalkinBaseball_, and Sandy Alcantara turned in the best individual start of the run, working 7.0 innings and allowing just 1 earned run on 6 hits with 6 strikeouts and 2 walks.

Tonight, the Marlins host the Red Sox, and Tyler Phillips gets the ball for Miami against Boston's Payton Tolle. Phillips is 3-6 with a 3.67 ERA and was tagged for 4 earned runs over 5.1 innings in a loss to the Pirates in his last start, on August 13. Tolle is 8-6 with a 3.08 ERA; in his last outing, against Arizona on August 19, he went 5.0 innings and allowed 3 earned runs with 6 strikeouts in a no-decision.

Boston is favored tonight, and the total points to a low-scoring game, a shape that fits both starters' recent form. Miami sits 4.0 games back in the NL Wild Card race with an elimination number of 22, and a series win over Boston would be a way to start closing that gap.
