The Braves are 36-16. That's not a typo, that's the best record in the sport, and they're rolling into this one having won 4 of their last 5. Washington is hanging around .500-ish at 25-27, which is fine for a rebuild, but "hanging around" is not what you want to be doing when you walk into Truist Park in late May.

Pitching matchup is where this thing tilts hard. Grant Holmes has been a stabilizer for Atlanta at 3-1 with a 3.80 ERA after getting bumped to the swingman role earlier this month and then earning his way back into the rotation. Jake Irvin, on the other hand, is sitting on a 5.79 ERA and a 1-4 record, and his last outing against the Dodgers was a 6-run, 4-inning grease fire. The Braves lineup is averaging better than 5 runs a game. The math is not friendly.
Atlanta's injury list is the only thing keeping the door cracked. Sean Murphy is out at least 8 weeks with a finger issue, Drake Baldwin just hit the IL with an oblique, and the catching room is basically held together with tape. Kyle Farmer is down too, and Jurickson Profar is gone for the season after his PED appeal got denied. Walt Weiss is winning anyway, which says everything about the depth.

Washington's pitching staff, meanwhile, is a MASH unit. Trevor Williams, Josiah Gray, DJ Herz — all on the 60-day. Tyler Stuart just had Tommy John. That's why Irvin is out there taking the ball every 5 days regardless of what the line looks like. They don't really have a choice.
The market sees it the way you'd expect: Braves -194 on the moneyline, -1.5 at -123, and DK has 88% of spread handle on Atlanta. There's no edge being flagged on either side here — every EV number is negative — so this is a watch-the-game day, not a hammer-the-ticket day. If you're squinting for a contrarian angle, the under at 8.5 is at least getting some sharp respect with the line shading down from Pinnacle's 9.
Bottom line: Nationals would need Irvin to suddenly remember how he pitched in 2024 and the Braves to leave the bats in the case. Possible. Not probable.
