Saturday's matinee gets going at 4:10 PM ET at the Trop, and the pitching matchup card right below sets the table for what looks like a classic Rays pitching-and-defense vs. surging-Nats-offense spot. Tampa Bay sits 41-29 and is still the better team on paper, but the way these two are arriving in this series is worth a second look before you stamp anything.
The Nationals are 39-35 and have absolutely been swinging it. They just took 3 of 4 from Seattle at home including 10-1 and 8-3 wins, then knocked off the Royals back-to-back 7-3 and 6-4 to push the streak to 4. That is not a flukey run against soft competition either, beating up on the Mariners is a real result. This is a Washington club that is starting to look like it has actually figured something out, which is not a sentence you get to write often in June about the Nats.

Tampa Bay, meanwhile, has lost 4 of 5 and the bats have gone quiet at the worst time. The Dodgers held them to 3 runs across 2 games to close that series, including a 1-0 shutout in the finale where Justin Wrobleski went 6 innings on them. Yandy Diaz did at least drag them to a shutout win of their own in the middle of that west coast trip with a 2-homer day, so the offense is in there somewhere, it just has not been showing up consistently.
Injuries are where this matchup gets uncomfortable for the Rays. Jake Fraley is gone for 6-to-8 weeks after hernia surgery, Gavin Lux is still on the 60-day, Jonny DeLuca is on a rehab assignment, and Ryan Pepiot is done for the year after May hip surgery. Washington's pitching staff is also a M.A.S.H. unit (Jake Irvin, DJ Herz, Trevor Williams, Josiah Gray all on the IL), but the Rays leaning on a bullpen that just lost Jonathan Heasley and Jesse Scholtens to the IL is the more pressing problem for this specific game.

The series storyline is pretty clean: hot underdog with house money against a heavier favorite trying to right the ship at home. The Rays are still the better-rostered team and the Trop usually plays in their favor, but the Nats are not laying down right now and Tampa's lineup has not looked the part for a week. Saturday's middle game is where you find out which trend bends first.
