TLDR: Baltimore built a laugher of a lead, St. Louis nearly stole it back with one huge inning, and it took a ninth-inning run for the Orioles to walk out of Busch Stadium with the series in hand.

Baltimore Orioles
  • Won 4 of last 5 games as of today
  • Just handed Bradish a 5-year extension
  • Took first two meetings of this series
  • Bautista and Helsley both out 60-plus days
  • O'Neill freshly on IL with shoulder inflammation
  • Sub-.500 club at 65-68 overall
St. Louis Cardinals
  • McGreevy has been a steadying rotation arm
  • Kept this one within a run despite trailing big
  • Lost fifth straight game
  • Missing Winn (thumb) and Pereira (hand)
  • Rotation also down Dobbins and Pallante

Kyle Bradish took the ball for Baltimore trying to build on a 13-1 series-opening blowout, while Michael McGreevy started for St. Louis trying to stop a five-game skid from turning into six. Neither one wound up deciding much, because this game turned into a bullpen fight by the middle innings.

The absences on both rosters were already stacking up before first pitch. Baltimore is playing without Ryan Helsley and Felix Bautista, both on the 60-day injured list, and just placed right fielder Tyler O'Neill on the 10-day IL Wednesday with shoulder inflammation. St. Louis is down shortstop Masyn Winn (thumb fracture) and outfielder Everson Pereira (hand), gaps that help explain how this series has gone: Baltimore has outscored the Cardinals 21-8 across the first two meetings.

This game looked nothing like the opener for a while. Baltimore jumped out fast and appeared to be cruising toward another laugher, before Oli Marmol's club put together its best inning of the week and forced a ninth to be necessary.

Baltimore's 5-run first and 2-run second staked Bradish to a 7-1 cushion that felt like it might get out of hand again. Instead, St. Louis answered with a 6-run fifth to flip the whole game and tie it at 7-7, turning a laugher into a dogfight. Baltimore collected 13 hits, St. Louis had 11 of its own, and it took a run in the ninth for the Orioles to finally put it away.

Zoom out and both of these clubs are treading water. Baltimore, at 65-68 entering the day, has still won 4 of its last 5 and takes the first two meetings of this set. St. Louis, at 66-68, dropped its fifth straight and has now been out-hit and out-scored in back-to-back games against the O's after getting run off the field in the opener.

Neither team is playing for October at this point, but nights like this one are exactly why these two kept selling tickets down the stretch — a laugher that turned into a nail-biter, with both bullpens taxed and neither offense willing to go quietly.
