On the mound — starting pitchers.

Baltimore flies into T-Mobile Park for a 6:40 PM PT first pitch with a familiar face on the mound: Brandon Young (5-1, 3.04), who just no-doubted the Mariners on June 10 for 7 innings of 2-hit, 0-run ball before Jackson Holliday slammed the door with a grand slam. Logan Gilbert (4-4, 3.62) toes the rubber for Seattle off a 6-inning, 1-ER no-decision in that same Baltimore series.

The bigger story in Seattle is that Cal Raleigh is back. The M's catcher has been out since mid-May with an oblique strain and is being activated for this exact game after mashing 5 homers in a 5-game rehab stint at Triple-A Tacoma. J.P. Crawford (hand) is also expected to come off the IL Tuesday, which gives this lineup a totally different look than the one Young carved up last week.

Recent form.

Both teams limp into this one. The Orioles ripped off 3 straight wins (including 2 over Seattle) before the Padres took the next 2 in Baltimore. The Mariners are 1-4 in their last 5 and just got run out of D.C. by the Nationals 8-3 and 10-1 over the weekend. Whatever swagger first place in the AL West was supposed to bring, the M's are not currently carrying it.

Seattle's medical chart is doing some heavy lifting here. Josh Naylor took a shot to the shin Sunday (X-rays negative, but day-to-day), Randy Arozarena's hamstring kept him out of the weekend finale, and closer Andres Munoz was pulled Sunday with lower-back tightness. Baltimore's bigger names — Mountcastle, Westburg, Bautista, Eflin — have been gone forever, but the Orioles have managed to stay above water with the group they have.

Game-on-game, this is a fade-the-recent-result spot. Young owns this Mariners lineup right now, but he's facing a meaningfully better version of it with Raleigh and Crawford back in the box. Gilbert was perfectly fine last time out against these Orioles and the home park doesn't hurt. The 7.5 total is what you'd expect for two right-handers who don't beat themselves.
