TLDR: San Diego's fast start became the whole ballgame again, and the Giants ran out of innings to fully answer it.

San Diego completed a three-game sweep at Oracle Park, jumping out to a 5-run lead in the first two innings behind Tatis, Machado and Merrill and riding a three-man bullpen relay to a 6-4 win. San Francisco chipped away late but never had enough innings to close the gap, and lost another everyday piece when Rafael Devers' season ended with a core injury on the same day.

San Diego Padres
  • Scored 5 runs in the first two innings
  • Machado's 2-run homer, Merrill's 2-RBI double did damage
  • Bullpen trio of Peralta, Vasquez and Matsui slammed the door
  • Pivetta lasted only 4 innings on 69 pitches
  • Needed 3 relievers to finish 9 innings
  • Let a 5-run lead shrink to 2 by the sixth
San Francisco Giants
  • Chipped the deficit down with runs in the 4th, 5th and 6th
  • Matched San Diego's hit total at 9
  • Webb kept battling after a rocky start
  • Fell behind 5 runs in the first two innings
  • Webb tagged with the loss
  • Lost Rafael Devers for the season on the same day

Nick Pivetta got the ball for the 4:20 PM PT finale and gave the Padres exactly what a team stretching him out slowly wants: 4 innings, 5 strikeouts, no walks, done at 69 pitches. Logan Webb took the loss on the other side after the game got away from him early, the one constant on a Giants staff that's been picked apart since the trade deadline.

San Francisco was already down its shortstop with Willy Adames out for weeks, and Sunday added a bigger blow: Rafael Devers, who put up an .865 OPS with 37 home runs and 98 RBI this season, is now done for the year and expected to undergo surgery for a core injury that had bothered him for years. That's two everyday regulars gone from a lineup that was already leaning on September call-ups.

The damage came fast. Fernando Tatis Jr. went 3-for-3 with 2 RBI, Manny Machado hit a 2-run homer, and Jackson Merrill added a 2-RBI double as San Diego put up 5 runs in the first two innings and never trailed again.

San Francisco chipped away, cutting the deficit to 2 with runs in the 4th, 5th and 6th, and finished with 9 hits, matching San Diego's total. It just never had enough innings left to erase a 5-run head start against a lineup that's been one of the better ones in the sport since the All-Star break.

The Padres' bullpen closed it out in relay: Wandy Peralta picked up the win, Randy Vasquez handled the eighth, and Yuki Matsui struck out the side for his first save of the season. San Diego also got a nice footnote out of it — Ethan Salas collected his first career hit, a triple in the fourth, making him the youngest player since Machado in 2012 to debut with a three-bagger.

The Polymarket chat ran hot through the middle innings and stayed that way to the finish — room traffic came in more than 3 times the season's typical crowd. "Like this message if you took a W on over" pulled 14 reactions late, and "Go panhandle on the street guys not in the chat please" wasn't far behind. Dustin Harris, who'd driven in 5 runs across the series' first two games at Oracle Park, didn't factor into Sunday's box score — the lineup didn't need him to.
