TLDR: Philadelphia's been the best team in baseball for a week straight. Seattle just got outscored 41-4 across two nights. This one's not close on paper.

Philadelphia Phillies
  • Won 5 straight, swept St. Louis' first 3 games
  • Wheeler owns a 2.92 ERA and 10-4 record
  • Wheeler needed 98 pitches, walked 4 last start
  • Stott and Arraez both day-to-day with injuries
Seattle Mariners
  • Julio Rodríguez and Arozarena provide real power
  • Took 2 of the first 3 from the Cubs
  • Just lost 19-2 and 22-0 within a span of days
  • Down Donovan, Crawford and Emerson in the infield

Zack Wheeler gets the ball for Philadelphia and Logan Gilbert counters for Seattle when first pitch goes at 6:40 PM PT. Wheeler's 2.92 ERA still makes him one of the tougher assignments in baseball on paper, but his last time out against Miami wasn't clean — he needed 98 pitches to get through 5 innings and walked 4 while striking out 7. Gilbert's coming off a win over Milwaukee in which he also needed 100 pitches for 5 innings and issued 4 walks of his own, so neither ace is exactly cruising into this one.

Seattle's lineup still has teeth — Julio Rodríguez and Randy Arozarena give this club real thump — but the roster behind them is thinning out fast. Brendan Donovan just landed on the 7-day IL with a concussion, J.P. Crawford and Colt Emerson are both out at shortstop, and Bryan Woo is still working back from a shoulder issue. Philadelphia's banged up too, with Bryson Stott nursing a foot contusion and Luis Arraez out with a hamstring, but the Phillies keep finding ways to win anyway.

That contrast matters more than the raw price suggests. Philadelphia's riding a wave right now. Seattle's coming off a stretch that would knock the wind out of anybody.

The Phillies haven't lost since sweeping through Miami and taking the first 3 off St. Louis, running the winning streak to 5 straight. Seattle's 3-2 mark over its last 5 papers over a genuinely ugly stretch — the Mariners just got run out of their own ballpark 19-2 by the Cubs, days after an even worse 22-0 loss to Milwaukee. Bryce Miller took the loss in that latest disaster start, and while he's not on the mound tonight, that kind of beating chews through a bullpen fast, with extra relievers thrown into mop-up work they don't usually pitch.

Seattle's still hanging around the AL West and wild-card picture, and a T-Mobile Park crowd can change the energy in a hurry if the Mariners get off to a good start. But Philadelphia's arriving with more certainty at the plate and on the mound right now, and that kind of gap usually shows up on the scoreboard.
