Philadelphia closes out a four-game set at LoanDepot Park sitting at 14-20 and trying to keep the Don Mattingly bump alive. The Phillies fired Rob Thomson on Tuesday after a 9-19 start, won four straight under Mattingly, then got one-hit 4-0 by the Marlins on Saturday. Now Mattingly — who managed Miami from 2016-20 and won 2020 NL Manager of the Year here — sends Nola out for a getaway-day reset.

About that reset: Nola hadn't pitched since April 26 in Atlanta, the Phillies giving him an extra turn through the rotation after he allowed 11 runs on 13 hits and seven walks across nine innings in his last two starts. He's 99th out of 108 qualified arms in ERA and has been cooked by lefties since last summer. The Marlins lineup is missing Owen Caissie (illness) on Sunday, but Miami has earned the favorite tag here despite Janson Junk being the No. 5 starter. Junk has quietly run a 3.00 ERA and 1.06 WHIP through six starts.

The bullpen picture is the other shoe to watch. Jhoan Duran (oblique) may not need a rehab assignment before being activated, per Mattingly on Sunday — that's the closer the Phillies traded for in the offseason and have been missing in close games. On the other side, Marlins closer Pete Fairbanks is on the 15-day IL with numbness in his pitching hand, a possible recurrence of the nerve issue that sidelined him in 2024. If this thing is tied in the eighth, neither manager has his preferred answer.

The number to circle is the total. Eight is a friendly line for Junk and a brutal one for Nola given his last month, and the market closed without much conviction either way — DK money is over, but Pinnacle has the under +102. The Marlins are 16-18 and a game up on Philly in the standings; a series win at home in Mattingly's first trip back as the visiting manager would say a lot more about Miami than it would about the Phillies' new-manager glow.
