Cristopher Sánchez needed this one badly. His last time out was a career-worst disaster against Kansas City — 3.1 innings, 9 earned runs, 12 hits — and he walked into Comerica Park opposite a Tigers pitcher trending the other direction. Casey Mize threw 6.2 strong innings in a win over Texas his last time out, part of a season that's quietly turned into an All-Star case. It was a rebound arm against a rising one, with a 6:10 PM ET first pitch kicking off the series finale.

Phillies won outright 4-2, with the deep lineup — not the shaky Sánchez follow-up — deciding it.

Pregame

Philadelphia went off at -134 and delivered, riding Schwarber's MLB-leading power bat and a Don Mattingly-led offense that's been one of baseball's best since he took over in the dugout. Detroit's six-game streak made this line closer than the raw records suggested, but the safer outright lean was still the more talented lineup. It cashed clean.

Philadelphia also took the field without Justin Crawford, held out after tweaking his left knee in pregame drills a day earlier. Detroit had its own worry hanging over the dugout — closer Will Vest was just diagnosed with a stress fracture in his throwing elbow, a real hit to a bullpen that's carried this team's turnaround. Both sides walked in banged up in different spots, and the market noticed, with the total climbing pregame as bettors bet on two shorthanded bullpens leaking more runs.

None of that showed up on the scoreboard the way the number crunchers expected. This turned into a game decided by two lineups finding just enough offense in bunches rather than a track meet, and it was Philadelphia's bats that got there first.

The Phillies broke through with a run in the 3rd and cracked it open with 3 more in the 4th, and that was the ballgame. Sánchez settled in after the shaky first look, and Philadelphia's bullpen — shaky as it's been lately — did just enough to protect a two-run cushion the rest of the way.

Detroit answered late, plating single runs in the 5th and 8th, but 10 hits against 1 error weren't enough to crack a 2-run deficit. It's the kind of game that exposes exactly what's worrying about this roster right now — a lineup that's heating up but still can't consistently cash in traffic, and a bullpen that just lost its closer to a stress fracture heading into the stretch run.

Even in the loss, Detroit's turnaround is the real story of this series. A team that was 16 games under .500 in late May has been the best in the American League since June 1, and Saturday's loss doesn't erase that. For Philadelphia, it's a much-needed answer after getting run out of the building a night earlier — proof the Don Mattingly era, now well over a season's worth of games into his interim tenure, still has this offense playing meaningful baseball into the summer.

Both clubs head toward the All-Star break with something to sort out. Detroit needs bullpen answers with Vest sidelined, while Philadelphia needs to figure out whether Saturday's win was a real course correction or just one good night sandwiched between two ugly losses. Either way, this series had way more juice than the standings suggested.
