On the mound — starting pitchers.

Texas is 24-25 and hovering around .500 despite an injury list that looks like a phone book. The Angels, meanwhile, are 17-34 and coming off a Freeway Series sweep where the Dodgers put up 31 runs across 3 games. The Halos are a mess. The Rangers are not a juggernaut, but they don't need to be tonight.

The pitching matchup is the whole story. deGrom is sitting on a 3.02 ERA and just got the all-clear after some right knee discomfort against the Mariners — MRI came back clean, he's making the start. On the other side: Grayson Rodriguez, making his second start since July 2024 after a 655-day layoff. His debut last week against the Dodgers was rough — 7 runs on 7 hits and 4 walks in 3.2 innings, hence the 17.18 ERA carried into tonight.

Books have noticed. Texas is a -162 road favorite with the run line laying -1.5 at +106, and the total sits at 7.5. That's a steep number for a road team in a pitchers' park, which tells you how little faith the market has in Rodriguez settling in by start number 2.

The complicating factor for Texas is the IL. Corey Seager is on the 10-day with back issues, Wyatt Langford is still working his forearm back, and Josh Smith is dealing with viral meningitis. That's the spine of the lineup gone. The Angels aren't exactly healthy either — Travis d'Arnaud and Yusei Kikuchi are both out, Anthony Rendon is on the 60-day — but when you're already 17 games under .500, the next loss hits different than it does in Arlington.

Bet the matchup on the mound, not the standings. If deGrom looks like deGrom, this is over by the 5th. If the knee barks again or Rodriguez actually misses bats this time, suddenly you've got a live underdog in a ballpark that doesn't punish mistakes. Pick: lay it with Texas, but the under at 7.5 is the cleaner ticket.
